Peru, un estado Tóxico is an independent photography fanzine by Italian photojournalist Alessandro Cinque, created with the support of a National Geographic Society Grant, that explores the devastating social and environmental consequences of mining in the Peruvian Andes. Through powerful images and accompanying texts, it documents how neoliberal economic policies have affected Indigenous Quechua communities and why people across the region have taken to the streets in protest.
This limited-edition photozine combines visual storytelling with essays by Indigenous activists, anthropologists, and environmental experts, creating a unique publication that speaks about resistance, identity, and land. Designed to function both as a book and as a tool for dialogue, it connects communities experiencing the same struggles across Latin America.
Printed in a run of 500 copies and published by Raya Editorial, Peru, un estado Tóxico features an outer section printed on thick cardboard—allowing photographs to be cut out and reused—while the inner pages are produced on recycled newsprint, echoing the format of a traditional newspaper brought to remote areas where mainstream press rarely reaches.
Recognized internationally, the fanzine has been included in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Library in New York, affirming its cultural and historical significance as a testimony to the resilience of Indigenous communities in the Andes.
